From its humble beginnings in the early 1900s as a small school under the name Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science, it soon became popular for its high standards and contribution in the field of higher education, particularly humanities and engineering.
In 1964, it was renamed the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
The institute consists of 15 academic departments focused on education in engineering and the sciences.
